Making toys speak: Aled Lewis

A pretty long while ago, I saw these postcards on some blog and they just made me laugh out loud. Every single one of them. I completely forgot about it until I went to urban outfitters last week. And there it was: all the hilarious postcards I saw and many many more as a book! I had to get it right away and couldn't wait to share it on the blog. The book is called Toy Confidential and is a collection of all the toy stories the author and designer Aled Lewis created over the past year.
I've scanned a few of my favorite ones for you to enjoy.

Art on a string: Mo Man Tai

Do you wish for something special to pretty up an empty wall but you don't wanna hang yet another painting or poster? Ulrike Jurklies from the label Mo Man Tai, cantonese for 'no problem', has got something for you. In her online shop she sells patterns for string art of either famous paintings, like the 'girl with the peal earring' by Johannes Vermeer or the 'lying dog in the snow' by Franz Marc, or single words or phrases. You can choose the color of the string and the nails yourself so it matches the rest of your interior.
I think it's a great idea to make string art easier and an inexpensive option to spice up your walls at that.

Add a Little Neon: Kraft Paper Wrapping

Wrapping gifts is almost as fun as making or finding gifts. At least for me... And since I'm in a kraft paper craze lately it comes to no suprise that my christmas wrapping this year includes tha basic but lovely brown paper as well. To spice things up, I carved my own christmas tree stamp out of a print block. As a stencil for the tree I used the christmas tree that you can find in the already installed shapes in photoshop. To add a pop of color I used neon pink masking tape. The little white starts are made out of ceramic clay called Keramiplast. Some of them I painted with a sparkly pink nailpolish.

I'm pretty happy with my gifts this year and I hope you like the wrapping, too.

Current quest: Finding the right desk lamp

1,2,3,4

I'm always in improvement mode with everything that concerns my flat. The current thorn in my side is my desk lamp. It's a cheap basic Ikea lamp -  an old one at that - and it needs substituting....badly. Since my birthday is approaching and it's always a good idea to tip off future gift givers with a subtle hint, I went on the hunt in the vast www to find a lamp that I like. I found several, as you can see in my collages. Some of them are classic desk lamps, some of them have a little twist.
Which one do you like best?

Buy: A Real Doré

Garance Doré, the french fashion blogger, is a great illustrator. She would show snippets of her work on her blog sometimes and I always really adored here drawings and illustrations of fashion scenes and motifs.
She now just opened her first online shop where you can buy either prints or posters of some illustrations she's done over time. And here are my favorites:

Photography at its best: Ian Ruhter

Ian Ruhter is a photographer, but not your ordinary kind. He built his custom mega-camera - in a truck. With this camera he tours the US in search of beautiful spots or interesting faces to photograph. He always brings his chemicals with him so he can develop the pictures on large silver coated plates right on the spot. The outcome is stunning: beautiful black-and-white pictures of serene nature and all kinds of people.
Watch this video to learn more about his work or visit his website.

Hmmmmm: Carrot-Mango-Coconut-Soup

This is my favorite soup of all times, no discussion here. Everytime I make it I think, I should make it more often. And I've already infected friends with the carrot-coco-soup-craze as well. And since I'm a generous person and I grant everybody a delicious meal like this, I'll share the recipe today. I can't remember where I got the recipe from my first soup and I developed and improved it constantly anyway so I guess it's a customized soup now. And now, finde the recipe below and try your own.

For 4 persons you need:
  • 250 gr carrots
  • 150 gr mango
  • 800 ml water
  • little piece of fresh ginger
  • 2 cubes of vegetable bouillon
  • 0.5 litre carrot juice
  • 400 ml coconut milk
  • to serve:  scallions, cilantro, sour cream
  1. Start with cutting the carrots and mango into cubes and grate the ginger
  2. Bring the water to a boil and toss in the bouillon. Then cook the carrots, mango and ginger in the water until tender over medium heat (keep the lid on)
  3. Once the carrots are soft, blend everything in a food processor until its a creamy soup without any carrot pieces visible
  4. To finish, add the coconut milk and carrot juice and bring to a boil again
  5. I served my soup with cilantro, scallions and a tablespoon of sour cream but it can of course be left out or substituted by anything you like (maybe sauteed mushrooms)

Let it snow: DIY Snowflake and stars

It's gotten just a little more christmas-y in my kitchen. With leftover popsicle sticks, some buttons, a glue gun and spray paint I crafted a big snowflake and some little stars to decorate the wall with.
I got the idea from this blog, but used buttons to keep it all together.
If you wanna attempt your own, lay out your pattern before you glue, that way you avoid any miscalculations.

Do this: kraft paper gift wrap

From top left to bottom right: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
Simple kraft paper is my favorite way of wrapping gifts. It's customizable in so many ways and can be dressed up with lots of gold and bling bling or stay modest with just a little black edding.

Make it: chalkboard mugs

via

Christmas in coming. No doubt about that. Since I'm already in a pretty christmas-y mood, I'm also already thinking about which gifts I could make. And all of the above are a great inspiration.

Chalkboard paint is a multi talented crafter, but on these mugs it looks just perfect. I'm guessing these beauties are not too hard to make yourself.
The chalkboard paint can be bought in any craft store or made by you in any color you wish following this easy recipe:

Let me know if you try it!

Fashion photography in a nutshell

The publishing house Condé Nast opened its archives and lets us peek into fashion photography history. Almost one century of fashion photographs are currently exhibited at C/O Berlin, a beautiful venue in the heart of Berlin. Most pictures are from Elle and Vogue magazine and show clearly how outstanding early photographs have been already, whithout any help of the miracle maker photoshop.
If you have any chance to check it out you should. But go soon: it's only open until November 4th.

November.
